Beckham Clause Could Bring Lionel Messi Back To FC Barcelona
Argentine football icon, Lionel Messi may yet wear the Barcelona shirt again, thanks to a little-known rule in Major League Soccer known as the “Beckham Clause.”
The regulation allows MLS players to take short-term loans abroad during the league’s offseason, as long as they return before the new campaign begins.
The rule’s nickname dates back to David Beckham’s time with LA Galaxy, when he joined Paris Saint-Germain on a temporary deal during the MLS break. Since then, several top players, including Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan, have taken advantage of the same arrangement.
Messi, who is under contract with Inter Miami until 2028, could follow a similar route if both clubs agree. The MLS season ends in early December, which fits neatly with Europe’s winter calendar, making a brief reunion with Barcelona technically possible.
Naija News reports that speculation flared up after Messi’s emotional return to the newly renovated Camp Nou last week. His message afterwards stirred the hearts of fans who still see him as the soul of the club.
“Last night I returned to a place I miss with all my soul. A place where I was happily, where you made me feel a thousand times the happiest person in the world,” Messi wrote. “Hopefully, one day I can return and not just to say goodbye as a player, as I could never do…”
If things go as being speculated, Lionel Messi could play for Barcelona from December through February, then return to Florida before the new MLS season begins.
