Premier League Explains Controversial Call In Manchester United’s Win Over Liverpool

The Premier League has moved to clarify why referee Michael Oliver did not stop play for a head injury to Alexis Mac Allister during Manchester United’s opening goal in Sunday’s clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

The drama began in the second minute when Bryan Mbeumo fired United ahead. Moments before the goal, Mac Allister had gone down after colliding with his own teammate, Virgil van Dijk, as the two challenged for a header. The Argentine midfielder was left holding the back of his head while play continued, and Mbeumo pounced to give United the lead.

Under usual circumstances, referees are expected to halt play immediately when a player suffers a head injury. But according to a clarification sent from the Premier League’s match centre to Sky Sports, Oliver simply did not see the incident unfold.

That explanation didn’t sit well with Liverpool supporters or former players. Jamie Carragher voiced his frustration on Sky Sports, saying, “He was on the floor holding his head… Arne Slot is not happy with what happened with Mac Allister. I’m surprised Michael Oliver hasn’t pulled that back with a head injury.”

Former Reds defender Stephen Warnock shared the same view on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“There’s a bit of contention about this goal among the Liverpool fans. They think that there’s a head injury in midfield,” he said.

“Going back to the head injury that Mac Allister received, it was from an elbow by Van Dijk, his own player. That doesn’t matter, play should still be stopped for a head injury. Manchester United won’t care.”

Despite Liverpool’s protests, United went on to seal a 2-1 victory, with Harry Maguire adding a second goal later on to quiet the Anfield crowd.

After the match, Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim praised Amad Diallo for his performance but admitted the young winger was unhappy with being substituted.

“Amad is doing so well in that position. He is perfect for that position,” Amorim said. “He was upset today when I made the sub, but he had a yellow card, and that was a lot of man-to-man on the side, so it was just about that.

“If not, he would have continued in the game because he is so important to us. He struggled in these weeks, but we are here for him, and that is the most important thing.”
