Neymar Slams Ballon d’Or Organisers Over Raphinha’s Fifth-Place Finish
Santos forward, Neymar has taken aim at the Ballon d’Or organisers after Barcelona winger Raphinha was ranked only fifth in the 2025 edition of the award.
Neymar, now 33, made his feelings clear on Instagram shortly after Monday night’s ceremony. In a blunt post, the Brazilian star described his compatriot’s final position as “a huge joke.”
“Raphinha in 5th is too much of a joke,” Neymar wrote, leaving little doubt about his frustration.
The Ballon d’Or went to Ousmane Dembélé, who finished ahead of 18-year-old Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Vitinha came third, while Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah claimed fourth spot. Despite a season in which he carried Barcelona to silverware, Raphinha had to settle for fifth.
The 28-year-old enjoyed the best campaign of his career last season, delivering 56 goal contributions in 57 matches across all competitions.
His goals and assists were decisive as Barcelona secured both the LaLiga title and the Copa del Rey, cementing his reputation as the club’s standout performer.
Neymar’s criticism adds to the ongoing debate about the Ballon d’Or’s voting system and whether consistent top-level performers are being given due credit.
The former Paris Saint-Germain forward, who himself came close to winning the award during his peak years, made it clear he believed Raphinha deserved more recognition.
Not everyone shared Neymar’s anger. Kylian Mbappé, for instance, was quick to celebrate Dembélé’s achievement.
Reposting PSG’s official photo of his teammate with the trophy, Mbappé wrote: “It’s the emotions, my brother! You deserve x1000.”
