The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has started distributing sensitive and non-sensitive materials for the off-cycle governorship election in Bayelsa, with less than 24 hours to the exercise.

In addition, the electoral body provided life jackets to each of the eight local government districts where the gubernatorial election will take place.

Security personnel have also been stationed in Imo and Kogi States in addition to Bayelsa to create a comfortable atmosphere for voters and INEC representatives.

Naija News recalls that INEC had earlier restated its commitment to conduct a free, credible and fair election, suggesting that the election umpire was ready to conduct the off-cycle election.

The INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu re-emphasized that the choice of who would emerge as governor lies within the voters, stressing that all sensitive and non-sensitive materials have been delivered to the respective states.

He noted that irrespective of the rugged terrain and physical infrastructure in some locations, land and maritime transportation arrangements have been made to enable INEC officials to commence the voting on schedule.

He tasked INEC officials to demonstrate high patriotism and professionalism, stressing that the Commission is not a political party and has no candidate in the election.

He added that this is the first time in Nigeria’s history that these elections are held on the same day and across three geopolitical zones of the country.
