Afenifere Reacts To Purchase Of Presidential Yacht, Vehicles For NASS Members

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has reacted to the purchase of N5 billion presidential yacht and N160 million vehicles for members of the National Assembly.

Naija News reports that members of the National Assembly have come under heavy backlash over the purchase of SUVs valued at N160m for 469 lawmakers despite the economic situation in the country.

However, the Senate leadership and some lawmakers stressed that it is not new for government workers to buy vehicles for official duties.

Reacting in a communique issued on Wednesday by its leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Afenifere said members of the National Assembly have continued to live a luxurious lifestyle despite the harsh economic reality in the country.

The organisation added that it is sad that federal lawmakers are getting vehicles worth N160 Million Naira because of the deplorable state of the Nigerian roads.

Afenifere also stated that the Executive led by President Bola Tinubu cannot convince the people of the need for a yacht worth billions of Naira beyond ostentatious living.

It said: “Afenifere refuses to appreciate the calls for more sacrifices from Nigerians by the government, which members continue to maintain obscene and ostentatious lifestyles.

“It is most preposterous that members of the National Assembly approve vehicles worth N160 Million Naira because of the deplorable state of the Nigerian roads as if the responsibility to fix the said roads rests with the tax players.

“The Executive is unable to convince the people of the need for a yacht worth billions of Naira beyond ostentatious living.

“The costs of fuel rise prohibitively, and the exchange of Naira climbs astronomically without any verifiable economic policy.

“Afenifere remains committed to the ideals and principles of True Federalism.

“We are proud of our decision and efforts on the 2023 Presidential Election and remain convinced that it was the right step towards a united, secured and prosperous Nigeria and its continued corporate existence.
