The President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, has said the future of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is at stake.

Recall that about two weeks ago, a military coup toppled the government of the elected president of Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum, and the regional body is still discussing options to resolve the crisis.

It was to this end that the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Bola Tinubu, is hosting leaders of other member countries in Abuja on Thursday to address the political unrest in the Niger Republic

The summit focuses on potential actions after the military junta in Niger overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum.

This meeting came when coup leaders in Niger formed a new government and announced the appointment of 21 persons as ministers.

Naija News reports that the coup leaders announced the formation of the new government in a televised broadcast on Wednesday night, two weeks after toppling President Mohamed Bazoum in a coup.

However, Guinea-Bissau’s President, according to RFI reports, observed that the Niger coup would make it the fourth within the sub-region, a development which he says is not the best.

President Embalo said the future of ECOWAS is at stake following coups in four member states, including Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

Meanwhile, the regional body had earlier proposed a military intervention if the junta didn’t restore democracy within seven days, even though it said diplomacy was still the best way to go.
