Less than 24 hours after its launch, over 55 million users have reportedly joined the new social media platform, Threads owned by Meta (owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp).

It was gathered that millions of users including Nigerians have joined the new social media platform within hours of its launch.

It was learnt that Naija News, a leading online news platform in Nigeria also joined the trending Threads train, as other media platforms like NTA News, The Washington Post and The Economist followed.

Earlier this platform reported that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made a grand entrance to the trending social media platform, Threads.

It was gathered that Threads – owned by Meta which is founded by Mark Zuckerberg – has seen over 10 million people sign up after new strict measures introduced by Elon Musk on Twitter.

his first post on Threads, President Tinubu wrote: “My fellow Tailors, Idan has landed.”

The new platform is said to be the biggest challenger yet to Elon Musk-owned Twitter, which in recent times has faced a lot of issues.

The app went live on Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries at 2300 GMT on Wednesday and will run with no ads for now.

Threads, which launched on Thursday in over 100 countries now has 30 million users according to Zuckerberg.

Meta’s Chief Executive Officer, at about 4 pm Nigerian time, typed, “Wow, 30 million sign-ups as of this morning. Feels like the beginning of something special, but we’ve got a lot of work ahead to build out the app,” and according to him, the company is setting its sight on one billion users soon.

The massive user base comes amidst reports that Meta has issues dealing with users’ data, as some users have expressed doubt about the safety of their privacy on the new platform.

Other notable Nigerians who have joined the trending platform include former Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, and celebrities such as Ebuka, Funke Akindele, Adekunle Gold, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Hugh Jackman among others.

However, Naija News gathered that tendencies are that social media giant, Twitter might sue Meta over “systematic, willful and unlawful misappropriation” of Twitter’s trade secrets and IP.

It was also learnt that the social media company is also threatening to sue Meta for scraping Twitter’s data.

This was disclosed in a cease-and-desist letter sent on Wednesday to Mark Zuckerberg by Elon Musk’s lawyer Alex Spiro.

This platform understands that the allegations centre on trade secrets shared by ex-Twitter employees hired by Meta, but also hints that Meta may have been scraping Twitter’s data in violation of the terms of service.

Confirming reports of an impending lawsuit, Twitter owner, Elon Musk wrote on his social media page: “Competition is fine, cheating is not.”
