TSG Hoffenheim defender Kevin Akpoguma will undergo a diagnostic in Germany after suffering a head injury last Friday while playing for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Akpoguma exited the field in the second half of the Eagles’ 1-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja after taking a kick to the head during an aerial battle.

He left the game in the 55th minute after he received medical attention on the pitch for close to two minutes. Due to the injury, he was unable to participate in the Eagles’ 1-0 victory over Bissau on Monday.

It’s uncertain whether the Nigerian defender will play in Hoffenheim’s Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Ahead of the game against Bremen, Hoffenheim’s head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo said it was too early to say how serious the injury was which could imply that Akpoguma will not be available for the club this weekend.

“He suffered a nasty knock on his head,” Matarazzo said.

“We will see tomorrow (today) with the results of the MRI scan. We will see tomorrow if it is badly damaged.”

Akpoguma came in second place to Angelo Stiller for the Hoffenheim Player of the Month award for March with 31% of the vote. This season, he has made 23 appearances and received 8 cautions.

Despite the efforts of the 27-year-old Nigerian defender for the club, Hoffenheim is currently struggling in the Bundesliga. The German side are 15th in the Bundesliga with 22 points in 25 games, one spot above the playoff spot for relegation. ()
