LP Chieftain Speaks On Okupe’s Conviction Affecting Peter Obi's Campaign

According to him, the news came to the party as a rude shock and it has set things back for the party.

Tanko, who described Okupe as an exceptional democrat who believes in the rule of law and was working hard to deliver Nigeria back to the people, said the party was immediately taken aback when the news of his resignation broke.

Naija News earlier reported that Okupe stepped down from his position following the ruling of the Federal High Court Abuja on Monday sentencing him to jail.

Okupe, who was convicted by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu over a money laundering case brought before it by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on alleged money laundering and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N702 million valid had resigned following several reactions from different quarters after his conviction yesterday.

Taking to his Twitter handle on Tuesday, Doyin shared a copy of his resignation letter written to the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi.

He further urged Obi to appoint a DG, who is without any distractions to lead his campaign ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He shared a copy of the letter with the caption: ‘‘It’s time to step aside. But I am with PO and the Obidients and the Presidential Campaigns till God gives us victory in Jesus’ Name.”

However, Naija News while monitoring the programme, gathered that the Labour Party campaign council spokesperson revealed that it is yet to meet and take a decision on what has happened and “We on our part would remain resolute and determine to continue our journey to change the narrative of getting 133 million Nigerians out of poverty.”

He submitted that “We have to remember that this movement is not about one person, it’s a collective interest of everybody who wants to take Nigeria back to the hands of the people.

“It would strengthen us and we would look within ourselves to take the right decision at the highest level.

“We have not officially made pronouncement as regards Okupe’s resignation until when the campaign council meets, then a decision would be taken on what and how to do it.

“It’s going to be a collective decision in the interest of the Nigerians”
