The PUNCH: The Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday exchanged words with the All Progressives Congress over the manifestoes of their respective Presidential candidates, Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu. While the PDP asked the ruling party and its candidate to explain how they intended to do away with subsidy without inflicting pain on Nigerians, the APC presidential candidate shaded his counterpart, Atiku, saying he would not be a part-time president ‘’that will spend 50 per cent of his time ruling the country from Dubai.’’
The Guardian: There are concerns that more Nigerians are going to get infected and many more may die from nationwide cholera outbreak fuelled by flooding, terrorism-related activities, civil unrest, lack of proper environmental sanitation as well as shortage of vaccines. This is as United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), at the weekend, raised the alarm that more than 2.5 million people in Nigeria are in need of humanitarian assistance – 60 per cent of whom are children – and are at increased risk of waterborne diseases, drowning and malnutrition due to the most severe flooding in the past decade.
This Day: The United States Embassy yesterday issued a security alert on elevated risk of terror attacks in Abuja, the Nigerian capital. Following US Embassy terror warning, the British High Commission also issued advisory to its staff on movement while also announcing reduced services. Similarly, other European countries, THISDAY learnt, are reducing services and will be attending only to critical needs. But in a swift reaction, the Department of State Services (DSS) called for calm, saying necessary precautions are being taken to secure the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other parts of Nigeria.
The Nation: There was security alert last night in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This followed the issuance of travel advisories by the United States (U.S.) Embassy in Abuja and the United Kingdom to their citizens in Nigeria. But the Department of State Service (DSS) called for calm.
Daily Trust: The federal government has earmarked N23.57 billion for the purchase of new vehicles in 2023, according to the budget estimates for the fiscal year presented by President Muhammadu Buhari to the National Assembly. This is despite the allocation of N22.5bn to 212 government agencies for the same item in the current fiscal year, raising concerns over budgetary provision for critical infrastructure as the country grapples with dwindling revenue, rising debts, and fiscal deficits year after year.
