Nigeria Can Not Payback, Creditor Nations Should Forgive Debts Owed Them - Adeyemi

The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Smart Adeyemi, has reacted to the impeachment threat made by the opposition lawmakers over the worsening insecurity in the nation.

Naija News recalls that the lawmakers had threatened to commence impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari should he fail to address the insecurity within six weeks.

The Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Philip Aduda, made this known on Wednesday while briefing journalists at the Press Center of the National Assembly in Abuja.

In a chat with reporters on Wednesday, Adeyemi dismissed reports that the six weeks ultimatum for the president to address the security challenges was issued by opposition lawmakers.

He stated that the decision to give Buhari an ultimatum was a collective position of all the senators at the executive session before the plenary.

Adeyemi, however, said the impeachment threat to the President was issued by the opposition lawmakers, stressing that the Senate only agreed to give an ultimatum to Buhari.

He said: “I think it is wrong to say opposition. It was a collective decision of the senate, to give ultimatum, the only difference from what the opposition are eventually saying is a matter of semantics.

“We said that we are giving the president six weeks, they said they are serving impeachment notice immediately. We all agreed that we will move after six weeks.

“The opposition said we must give notice but we say it has to be six weeks ultimatum, they said after six weeks what happens? We said they should wait till after six weeks first. I don’t see any difference.
