Teenager Asked To Clean Court For 5 Days For Smoking Indian Hemp

NDLEA moves against cultivation of Indian hemp

An Ile-Ife magistrate court presided over by Magistrate Asiru Ayeni has on Tuesday, Jan 18 committed 19-year-old Peter Igwe, to cleaning and sweeping the court premises for 5 days.

The teenager was charged on two counts of possession and smoking of Indian hemp suspected to be weed.

The prosecutor, ASP Emmanuel Abdullah said the offences were punishable under sections 249(d) and 430 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

Abdullah also stated that the accused carried out the offense on January 17, around 3:00 am at Temitope Quarters, Ita-Osa Area, Ile-Ife.

The prosecutor also revealed that after the defendant smoked weed he began to conduct himself in a manner that would disturb the residents of the area.

Igwe, who was not legally represented admitted to smoking weed but said he had none in his possession.

The judge acquitted him on the count of possession but found him guilty of smoking.

Ayeni maintained that since the teenager has no prior criminal record he would therefore be subjected to community service.
