A church Bible study reportedly ended abruptly last weekend in Zambia after the worship centre building collapsed on worshippers.

Naija News learnt that no fewer than five people died in the Seventh Day Adventist -SDA- Church Bethsaida building collapse.

The church which is situated in Luyeye village of Kasama reportedly collapsed following heavy rainfall.

According to reports, worshippers were concentrated on the teaching on Saturday afternoon, January 8, 2022, when the incident happened.

An unconfirmed number of worshippers reportedly sustained degrees of injuries and have been admitted to the Kasama General Hospital.

The remains of those who died in the incident were laid to rest at Chiba Cemetery on Tuesday, January 11, Naija News understands.

Confirming the incident, Kasama District Commissioner, Elizabeth Goma, said three people including an infant died on the spot, while two adults died at the hospital last night.

On his part, the District Commissioner reportedly told journalists that 47 houses in the same area were destroyed by the rains.

Also, Northern Province Minister, Leonard Mbao, who visited the scene said it is disheartening to lose lives in such a manner especially that its only a week when rains started in the area.

He challenged relevant authorities to ensure that they inspect and certify all buildings so that they are fit for habitation and to avoid further loss of lives.

According to Mbao, his office will soon engage churches and other stakeholders for a meeting to discuss the issues.

Leading Fire Fighter from the Kasama Fire Brigade Hosea Mbao, attributed the collapse of the church building to the use of poor building materials.

He added that after r assessment of the building, it was clear that the building material used was not effective.
