Popular Afrobeat singer and activist, Seun Kuti has berated the decision of the government to reopen schools in Nigeria amidst surging COVID-19 cases.

Kuti in an Instagram post in which he condemned government action, described the move as wicked and inconsiderate, adding that virtual classes should have been encouraged.

He said the politicians were quick to approve the reopening of schools despite the pandemic because their own children don’t attend schools in the country.

While declaring that the elite class hates the struggling citizens, Kuti said the government is unwilling to invest in virtual learning because there is no immediate profit for them in it.

He wrote: “The only reason these children and undergraduates are forced to resume is because no one is willing to invest in virtual classrooms for them. There is no immediate profit to be made.

“This is wickedness. Pure and simple.”

Kuti is among concerned parents who have expressed their reservations over the resumption of schools despite increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

Meanwhile,  the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, has reported 1,430 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, 25th January.

The health agency confirmed the newly found cases of the dreaded disease on its official Twitter account.

This brings the total number of cases n Nigeria to 112,996 with 98,359 people already discharged and 1,507 deaths.
