The federal government of Nigeria has explained why it can’t publish details of beneficiaries under the COVID-19 palliatives being given to citizens.

The Minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management, and social development, Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouq explained that it is against the norms to publish the names of individuals that benefit from such government interventions.

She stated this on Wednesday while speaking during the presidential task force briefing on COVID-19, explaining that it is against “human dignity” to support someone and then make it public.

Speaking further on what government is doing to alleviate the impact of the lockdown on its citizens, Hajia Farouq said: “We were given 70,000 metric tonnes of grains. As of today, we were able to deploy 9,320 metric tonnes of grains to these three affected areas. That is about 334 trucks, while Kano is ongoing. Fifty trucks are almost arriving Kano.”

Naija News recalls some stakeholders, including the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have accused the federal government of insincerity over the sharing of the palliatives across the country and urged the government to make public the details of those who have benefitted from the palliatives.

As at 11:55 pm 29th April, 2020, 1728 confirmed cases of COVID-19 cases have been reported in Nigeria. Discharged: 307, Deaths: 51.
