Bulgarian Economist, Kristalina Georgieva Emerges As IMF CEO

The International Monetary Fund announces that World Bank CEO and Bulgarian environmental economist, Kristalina Georgieva, will become the Fund's new Managing Director. Georgieva replaces Christine Lagarde who resigned on September 12th.

Georgieva is the second woman to head the Fund in its 75-year history. The new Managing Director begins her tenure amidst turbulent economic forecasts.

She took over from Christine Lagarde, who announced her resignation to pursue her nomination to lead the European Central Bank. Her resignation took effect on September 12th.

Georgieva who took over the presidency of the world bank from Jim Yong Kim in February proceeded on a leave of absence from her position as  WorldBank leader after she was nominated as a candidate to be Managing Director of the IMF.

She took to the micro-blogging platform, Twitter to share excitement about her appointment as world bank CEO.
