Nigeria Boycotts WEF Meeting In South Africa

Nigeria has boycotted the World Economic Forum on Africa holding in Capetown, South Africa, between the Sept. 4 to Sept 6.

The decision of the Federal Government is linked with the renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa.

The development was confirmed to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday by a source in the Presidency.

The source said, “Nigeria has also pulled out of the World Economic Forum on Africa in Capetown, South Africa, scheduled for Sept. 4 to Sept 6 over the xenophobic attacks’’.

Naija News recalls the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo was billed to represent Nigeria at the forum which kicked off on Wednesday.

Nigeria had no delegation in attendance at the event, joining other African countries including Rwanda, Malawi and DR Congo who had also pulled out of the event in protest of the xenophobic attacks.

The source added that as part of the outcome of the meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Osinbajo and Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama on Wednesday, Nigeria had also demanded for full compensation for the victims of the attacks.

Similarly, Naija News earlier reported that the process has been set in motion to recall Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Kabiru Bala, following the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
