Afcon 2019: Balogun Snubbed As Rohr Picks Super Eagles Captains

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has picked his captains for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to commence tomorrow, Friday, in Egypt.

Naija News reports that the German picked John Mikel Obi as the team captain and also selected Ahmed Musa, William Troost-Ekong and Odion Ighalo as first, second and third deputies.

Afcon 2019: Super Eagles Full Fixtures, Time

The Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) 2019 will on Friday commence in Egypt.

However, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will begin their quest for a fourth title when they take on Burundi on Saturday, June 22.

The Super Eagles are also billed to take on debutants Madagascar as well as Guinea who were runners up in 1976.

Naija News understands that the CAF executive committee took a stunning decision to cede control of the running of the organisation and have FIFA general secretary, Fatma Samoura parachuted in as “FIFA High Commissioner for Africa”, according to sources.

Ahmad, who is the subject of an ethics investigation by FIFA after allegations of corruption and sexual misconduct, proposed the idea in a document shared with colleagues on the executive committee, the sources said.

Femi Kuti, Others To Perform At AFCON 2019

Four-time Grammy Award nominee and Nigeria’s legendary Afro-beat singer, Femi Anikulapo-Kuti will be joined by two other musicians Hakim from Egypt and Dobet Gnahore from Ivory Coast.

Naija News recalls that the 2019 AFCON is set to kick off with the new expanded 24 teams on Friday in Egypt, it will be preceded with a colourful opening ceremony.

In a post on CAF’s official Twitter handle, the continental football body confirmed that Femi would perform the official song for this year’s AFCON alongside Hakim and Gnahore.
