1. Cars burnt, several injured in Lagos Otedola bridge fire

A tanker laden with fuel, yesterday caught fire on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, on the bridge near the Otedola Housing Estate.

The accident was reportedly caused after the fuel tanker had a break failure and lost control before the explosion which resulted in deaths of individuals and burning of cars.

2. FG give details of killings under PDP administration

The presidency has accused the the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of playing irresponsible politics after it declared seven days of mourning over the violent killings in Plateau state.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina in a statement titled “Plateau And PDP’s Crocodile Tears – Presidency” listed details of brutal killings under the PDP regime.

3. Oyo government shuts down Bodija market over clashes

The Oyo State government has been forced to shut down Bodija market for security reasons following some violent protests.

Sporadic shooting and burning of properties were reported in the market and its environs, forcing the government to shut it down to prevent further break down of law and order.

4. World bank grants $2.1b loan to Nigeria to finance seven projects

Nigeria has been granted the sum of $2.1bn loan by the World Bank for the execution of seven projects in the country.

While releasing a statement on Thursday in Abuja, it was revealed that the loans were approved in Washington on Wednesday and are for seven projects to support Nigeria’s investment in nutrition, access to electricity, states’ fiscal transparency, polio eradication, women’s economic empowerment, public finance and national statistics and reducing vulnerability to soil erosion.

5. Nigerian Army arrests Boko Haram leader in charge of Benue attacks

A combined team of troops of the 707 Special Forces Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police and the Department of State Security Services in Makurdi have arrested a key Boko Haram suspect known as Aminu Yaminu nicknamed Tashaku.

According to the assistant Director Army Public Relations Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni who revealed this through a press statement, Tashaku Aminu is believed to have masterminded most of the recent attacks in Benue State.

6. President Buhari signs two new bills into law

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, gave presidential assent to two new bills.

According to Senator Ita Enang, presidential aide on National Assembly matter, while speaking with state house correspondents, the new laws were the Medical Residency Training Act, 2018 and the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (Establishment, Etc) (Amendment) Act, 2018.

7. Governors to meet security chiefs to discuss killings in the country.

The spate of killings across the country has drawn a continuous concern among the leaders as Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) yesterday met in Abuja.

At the meeting, agenda revolved around the minimum wage, the issue of insecurity, especially the recent killings in Jos, and the governors resolved to meet the nation’s security chiefs for more discussions on how to find a lasting solution to the crisis.

8. Gunmen kill former Akwa-Ibom governorship aspirant

Mr. Okon Iyanam, a former governorship aspirant in Akwa Ibomstate, was on Wednesday shot dead at his Heritage Hotels and Resorts in Mowe, Ogun State.

Elder brother to the deceased ,Victor Iyanam, who confirmed the death, said that a birthday party was going on at the hotel and the former Globacom staff was resting when the gunmen came at about 12.30am.

9. Pope appoints 14 new cardinals

Pope Francis appointed 14 new cardinals in a ceremony at St Peter’s Square on Thursday.

During his address, the pope also encouraged cardinals not to engage in a “quest of honours, jealousy, envy, intrigue, accommodation and compromise.”

10. All African teams eliminated in first round of 2018 World Cup tournament

All five countries representing Africa at the ongoing Russia 2018 World cup tournament, have now been eliminated from the competition.

Senegal carried Africa’s hopes till Thursday but were also sent packing after a 1-0 loss to Columbia.
