1. President Buhari declares June 12 as democracy day

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared June 12 as the new date to commemorate Democracy Day in Nigeria in honour of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

He also conferred Abiola with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).

The President in a tweet on his official handle explained why June 12 will replace May 29. He noted that June 12 is a more symbolic day.

2. Lawmakers ask Dan-Ali to withdraw statement on grazing

The National Assembly have jointly negated the recommendation of Mansur Dan Ali, minister of defence, that the anti-open grazing law should be suspended.

The minister had claimed the law is creating tension in various states.

3. Police accuse Saraki of buying guns for Offa bank robbers

The Police say Dr. Bukola Saraki was accompanied on his sympathy visit to the palace of the Olofa of Offa, Oba Muftau Gbadamosi Esuwoye, by four gang members involved in the Offa bank robbery.

The police source revealed that contrary to widely publicized general opinion, Dr. Saraki was only invited to explain why he allegedly purchased weapons for the gang suspected of carrying out the bank robbery in which many innocent lives were lost.

4. Court grants bail to former Kaduna governor, Yero

The Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna on Wednesday granted bail to former governor of Kaduna State, Ramalan Yero and three others standing trial over alleged money laundering.

Yero was arraigned alongside a former minister, Nuhu Wya, ex-PDP chairman in the state, Abubakar Gaya-Haruna and former secretary to the state government, Hamza Ishaq.

5. Buhari bids farewell to Fayemi from his cabinet

As the Ekiti Governorship election draws closer, Kayode Fayemi, former Minister of Mines and Steel Development, has formally bowed out of office, after a valedictory service was held in his honour yesterday.

Buhari stated that Fayemi’s role would be difficult to fill in the cabinet.

6. Court blocks group from accessing details of Buhari’s London medical trip

The Court has refused an application demanding disclosure of information in respect of the cost of President Muhammadu Buhari’s medical treatment abroad.

Judge, John Tsoho of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court on Tuesday ruled that the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act does not provide that such a disclosure should be made without the consent of the president.

7. Labour wants minimum wage implemented by September

President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba has said if all members of the tripatriate committee are committed to doing what is right and working within the timeline already set, the new minimum wage can be achieved in September.

He stated this on Wednesday while addressing newsmen at the ongoing 107th session of the International Labour Conference, ILO.

8. Buhari’s award of GCFR to MKO Abiola is illegal – Belgore

A former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Alfa Belgore has said that the award of Nigeria’s highest national honour on late Moshood Abiola is illegal.

Belgore, who was CJN from 2006 to 2007, said the national honours cannot be awarded posthumously, let alone the GCFR, which is the highest honour in the land.

9. Senators confirm previously rejected INEC nominee

There was a heated debate on the floor of the Senate, yesterday, over a failed bid to reject a nominee of President Muhammadu Buhari, Ahmad Bello Mahmud. Mahmud is a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) nominee.

Mahmud had been rejected twice, on the grounds that he is from Kebbi State, in spite of the fact that he served as a commissioner of Justice in Zamfara State.

10. Nigeria lose friendly against Czech republic

The Super Eagles lost their last friendly before the commencement of the 2018 World cup tournament against the Czech republic.
