Man dies as violence erupts in Bayelsa APC Secretariat

One person has been killed during a fallout at the Bayelsa State Secretariat of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) in Yenagoa.

A fight erupted when faithful of suspended state Chairman of the party, Mr. Tiwei Orunimighe‎, attempted to interrupt the ‎inauguration of an Acting Chairman and an Executive Council.

The chaos started when party members were awaiting the presence of Mr. Timipre Sylva, a former governor, and leader of the party in the state.

However, the identity of the deceased has not been ascertained, though many claim that he was an unsuspecting hawker, who was unfortunately hit by a stray bullet during a gun battle between security personnel and Mr. Orunmighe’s supporters.

The gun battle resulted in a stampede causing people to sustain injuries from the chaos, including five APC members.

The supporters of the suspended chairman were said to have stormed the party secretariat with weapons and placards and kicking against the suspension.

Also, the exchange of gunfire called the attention military men.

The soldiers were able to stop the bus used by the suspected party thugs from leaving the scene of the attack. The bus was parked along Bay Bridge Road in Yenagoa.

A member of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Israel Sunny-Igoli, said Mr.Orunimighe and ex-militant, General Africa Ukpariasa were responsible for the chaos.

Mr. Sunny-Igoli said APC members in Bayelsa State will challenge any intimidation. He added that the party is in the process of restoring peace within its fold, saying the sponsors of the attack will be brought to book.
