Suspect in Massachusetts Murder Flees Kenyan Custody

Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe, the prime suspect in a Massachusetts murder case, made a daring escape from police custody in Nairobi, Kenya. The escape unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when a man, purporting to be Kangethe’s lawyer, facilitated a meeting that led to the suspect’s flight to freedom.

Nairobi’s top police official, Adamson Bungei, expressed his dismay at the incident, which he described as “embarrassing” to the force. The escape prompted an immediate manhunt and the detention of four officers who were on duty, now under investigation for their roles in the oversight.

Margaret ‘Maggie’ Mbitu, 31, was found dead inside a Boston Logan Airport parking garage on Wednesday, two days after she went missing

Kangethe, 40, is wanted in Massachusetts for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu, whose body was discovered in a car at Logan International Airport on October 31, 2023. Following the discovery, it was reported that Kangethe fled to Kenya, sparking an international search that ended with his capture in a Nairobi nightclub on January 30.

The incident has ignited discussions around the extradition process, with Kangethe’s legal representation challenging the conditions of his detention and arguing for his rights. The Kenyan court is set to deliberate further on the extradition and related legal proceedings on February 9.
