Felix Tshisekedi Inaugurated for Second Term Amid Disputed Election in DRC

Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi was sworn in for a second term amid controversies and disputes over the December election results. The inauguration ceremony at Kinshasa’s Martyrs Stadium was attended by thousands, including African heads of state and foreign envoys.

Tshisekedi, who claimed a landslide victory with more than 70 percent of the vote, emphasized national unity and resolving conflicts in his inaugural speech. Despite challenges, including opposition allegations of vote rigging and calls for nationwide protests, Tshisekedi vowed to consolidate progress from his first term, focusing on youth employment, women’s rights, and national cohesion.

The election, which saw more than 40 percent turnout, was marked by logistical issues and accusations of fraud. Opposition leaders, including businessman Moise Katumbi, rejected the results and urged public mobilization against them. The Congolese Electoral Commission acknowledged some irregularities but maintained the election’s integrity.
