Congo President Tshisekedi Re-elected Amid Opposition Outcry

Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi has secured a second term with over 70% of the vote in the December 20 election, as announced by the country’s election commission. Despite this landslide victory, the election has sparked controversy, with opposition candidates and civil society groups labeling it a ‘farce’ and calling for a rerun due to significant logistical issues. Businessman Moise Katumbi, the runner-up with 18%, and other opposition figures have expressed their rejection of the results, urging supporters to mobilize. The election, which saw over 40% voter turnout, has been marked by disruptions at polling stations and extended voting periods, fueling distrust in the electoral process. The final results, subject to confirmation by the constitutional court, are expected by January 10, with the presidential inauguration scheduled for the end of the month.
