Labour Party Unveils Konto As Okereke’s Running Mate

The Labour Party (LP) has unveiled Hajja Bintu Konto as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Naija News reports that Konto will contest alongside the party’s presidential candidate, Chibuzo Okereke.

The party said her selection followed consultations with major stakeholders and reflected its determination to present a ticket founded on competence, integrity and inclusion.

The National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Ken Asogwa, announced the nomination in Abuja on Saturday.

Asogwa described Konto as a public health specialist and humanitarian professional with more than three decades of experience in healthcare delivery, community development and emergency intervention.

He said she had worked extensively with vulnerable communities, particularly in the North-East.

Asogwa said, “She retired from Catholic Relief Services after serving in several leadership roles, including Community and Government Liaison Officer.

“She worked extensively in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States, coordinating response and mobilisation efforts for internally displaced persons and other vulnerable groups.”

The party spokesman added that Konto is a trained nurse, midwife and public health specialist with a master’s degree in public health.

He said, “A trained Nurse, Midwife and Public Health Specialist, Konto holds a Master’s degree in Public Health.

“She has also lectured in Community Health and currently serves on the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria. She is National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition, ACOMIN.”

The Labour Party said Konto’s nomination underscored its commitment to gender inclusion, national unity and the recruitment of competent leaders from different parts of the country.

According to the party, her professional background would strengthen the ticket’s understanding of health, humanitarian and development issues.

“With Hajja Konto, the ticket brings compassion, administrative experience and a clear grasp of Nigeria’s development challenges, especially for women, children and communities affected by insecurity,” the party stated.

Asogwa also said Konto’s ability to speak several Nigerian languages had enabled her to work effectively with governments, traditional institutions and civil society organisations.

“Fluent in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura, Konto has led engagements with government, traditional institutions and civil society on health, nutrition, WASH and humanitarian programmes,” he added.

The LP described the Okereke-Konto ticket as one representing a new generation of purposeful leadership.

It said the pair would focus on rebuilding public confidence, strengthening institutions, reviving the economy and improving security if elected.

The party added that the ticket represented “a new generation of purposeful, people-centred leadership” committed to restoring hope and addressing the country’s pressing challenges.

It urged Nigerians to support the presidential and vice-presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
