Alonso Officially Assumes Duty As Chelsea Coach

Chelsea Football Club have begun a new era under Xabi Alonso after the Spaniard resumed duty as the club’s new head coach.

Alonso, who was appointed in May, arrived at the club’s training base in Cobham on Thursday as preparations began for his reign at Stamford Bridge.

The 44-year-old joins the London club with coaching experience from Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid.

Chelsea confirmed Alonso’s arrival in a video shared by the club on Thursday.

The video was accompanied by the messages, “Xabi Alonso arrives at Cobham,” “This is where it starts,” and “A new chapter awaits.”

Naija News reports that Alonso’s appointment fills the vacancy created by the sacking of Liam Rosenior following a disappointing campaign.

Chelsea endured a poor season last term, finishing 10th in the Premier League and missing out on European football.

The Blues will be hoping Alonso’s experience and tactical knowledge can help restore stability and return the club to the top end of English football.

Alonso built a reputation as one of Europe’s emerging coaches following his spells with Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid.

The Chelsea hierarchy will now expect him to lead a turnaround at Stamford Bridge after a season that fell below the club’s standards.

Alonso is not new to Stamford Bridge, having played there several times during his career with Liverpool.

He famously scored the only goal in a 1-0 Premier League win that ended Chelsea’s remarkable 86-match unbeaten home league record.

He also scored from the penalty spot in Liverpool’s dramatic 4-4 draw with Chelsea in the second leg of the 2008/2009 UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

If all goes according to plan, Alonso is expected to remain in charge of Chelsea until the summer of 2030.
