All Three Host Countries Eliminated From 2026 FIFA World Cup

The United States of America (USA), Mexico and Canada, joint hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, have all been eliminated from the tournament following the USA’s 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16 on Monday, July 6, 2026.

The defeat at Lumen Field in Seattle ended the last remaining campaign by a host nation and completed a disappointing outing for all three co-hosts, who had each reached the knockout stage but failed to progress to the quarter-finals.

The 2026 edition is the first World Cup to be jointly hosted by three countries and the first to feature an expanded 48-team format.

Naija News reports that Canada was the first of the three host nations to bow out after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Morocco in the Round of 16 on Saturday, July 4.

Morocco’s Azzedine Ounahi scored twice before Soufiane Rahimi added a late goal to seal a comfortable victory.

Canada’s campaign was also affected by injury concerns over star winger, Alphonso Davies, whose fitness issues limited the team’s options during the tournament.

England Ends Mexico’s Run

Mexico followed Canada out of the competition on Sunday after losing 3-2 to England at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The match was played before more than 80,000 fans, but Mexico could not take advantage of home support.

Jude Bellingham scored twice within 98 seconds in the first half, while Harry Kane converted a penalty after England had been reduced to 10 men.

The defeat ended Mexico’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 1986, when the country last hosted the tournament.

Following the exit, Mexico coach, Javier Aguirre, is expected to be replaced by his assistant, Rafael Marquez.

Belgium Thrash USA In Seattle

The United States of America team became the last of the three co-hosts to exit the tournament after Belgium recorded a 4-1 victory in Seattle on Monday.

The defeat followed a controversial build-up to the fixture, dominated by the reinstatement of US forward Folarin Balogun after an earlier red-card suspension, as well as comments by US President Donald Trump on the match.

Belgium’s comfortable win ensured that none of the host nations would feature in the quarter-finals.

Non-host Nations Dominate Last Eight

The 2026 World Cup began on June 11 and is being staged across 16 cities, including 11 in the United States, three in Mexico and two in Canada.

The tournament is scheduled to end with the final on July 19.

With the co-hosts now eliminated, the remaining quarter-final field is made up entirely of non-host nations.

The teams still in contention include Morocco, France, Norway, Spain, Belgium, England and Argentina, while the final places are expected to be completed by Egypt or Switzerland and Colombia.
