Jordan Henderson Ruled Out Of World Cup After Freak Celebration Injury

England has suffered a significant blow at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after midfielder Jordan Henderson was ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a serious wrist injury that will require surgery.

Jordan Henderson, 36, was injured moments after England’s dramatic 3-2 last-16 win over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.

Henderson did not play in the match but joined teammates and supporters on the pitch to celebrate the win. During the celebrations, he fell awkwardly while attempting to climb over the advertising hoardings, landing heavily on his arm.

Medical staff rushed to treat the experienced midfielder before he was carried off on a stretcher while receiving oxygen. He was later taken to a hospital in Mexico City for further assessment.

Scans confirmed a fractured wrist that will require surgery, ending Henderson’s World Cup campaign.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed the severity of the injury after the match.

“Jordan [Henderson] just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad,” Tuchel said on BBC One after the 3-2 win.

“It’s quite a serious injury and it doesn’t fit the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in the hospital.”

Henderson remained in hospital overnight and did not travel back with the rest of the England squad to their base in Kansas City. A member of the team’s support staff accompanied him.

Despite being expected to miss the remainder of the tournament, it is understood the former Liverpool captain hopes to stay with the England squad for the rest of their World Cup campaign in the United States.

Naija News gathered that Henderson had made only one brief substitute appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
