Tinubu Holds Closed-door Meeting With Alia, Suswam Over Benue Political Tension
President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, held a closed-door meeting with Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia and former governor of the state, Senator Gabriel Suswam, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting is targeted at resolving the political tension in the Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Naija News understands.
The meeting comes at a time of worrying political disagreements in the APC between Governor Alia and supporters of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
The two leaders have been locked in a battle for control of the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It also follows recent political realignments in the state, which saw Suswam lose out in the APC Senatorial primaries in Benue State following a review of party candidates by the national leadership of the party.
According to New Telegraph, the timing of the meeting has heightened speculation that it is connected to efforts by the Presidency to ease tensions, reconcile contending interests and promote unity within the state’s political class ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Naija News recalls that a party source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that the recent exclusion of former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, from the APC senate list was linked to the political contest for influence in Benue State.
The Presidency had yet to issue an official statement on the outcome of the meeting as of the time of filing this report.
