Lagos Government Postpones BECE Exam Over Oro Festival

The Lagos State Government has postponed all Basic Education Certificate Examination papers earlier fixed for Wednesday, July 1, 2026, following the announcement of the Oro Festival in parts of Ikorodu Division.

Naija News reports that the change was announced on Tuesday through the government’s official 𝕏 account after consultations with education stakeholders.

According to the new arrangement, the affected papers will now be written on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, while other examination papers will continue on their original schedule.

The BECE for 2026 began on Monday, June 29, and is being conducted across the state.

The government explained that the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students, exam officials, and other people involved in the exercise, as movement restrictions linked to the Oro Festival could affect normal activities in some communities.

The festival is a traditional Yoruba practice that can involve curfews and limited public movement in certain areas.

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, through the Lagos State Examinations Board, said the adjustment was made after careful consideration with relevant parties.

It also advised candidates to check with their schools for the updated timetable and prepare for the new date.

The government apologized for any inconvenience caused and asked parents, guardians, school authorities, and candidates to cooperate.
