Four Killed As Police, Suspected Secessionist Clash In Anambra

The Anambra State command of the Nigeria Police Force has said four suspected members of a secessionist armed gang were killed during a security operation along the Ogboji–Ajalli Road in Orumba South Local Government Area of the state.

The command said firearms, ammunition, explosive devices, stolen vehicles, phones and other items linked to criminal activities were recovered during the operation.

Naija News reports that the information was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

Ikenga said the operation was carried out on Tuesday night by a police-led Joint Security Patrol Team, Aguata Sector, during a visibility and confidence-building patrol.

He said the team acted on credible intelligence gathered over time on the movement of heavily armed suspected members of a secessionist group operating in the area.

“The Police-led Joint Security Patrol Team, Aguata Sector, recorded a major operational success on the evening of June 23, 2026 following an armed confrontation with a suspected secessionist armed gang along the Ogboji–Ajalli Road in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State,” the statement read.

According to the command, the operatives neutralised four members of the gang and recovered several weapons and other incriminating items.

Ikenga said the recovered items included one General Purpose Machine Gun with 53 rounds of linked live ammunition, two AK-47 rifles, two magazines, 29 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm ammunition, 13 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition and four undetonated Improvised Explosive Devices.

Other items recovered were police camouflage uniforms and accessories, one white Toyota Sienna bus with registration number KJA 919 KH, Lagos, 10 Android phones, two feature phones, one laptop, one Point-of-Sale machine, two power banks, assorted charms, two live cartridges, ATM cards, a National Identification Card and a driver’s licence belonging to identified persons.

The police said preliminary investigations showed that other members of the gang fled into nearby bushes with gunshot injuries.

“Consequently, the Joint Security Team has intensified its operations in the area, including extensive combing and search efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover additional weapons and operational equipment,” the statement added.

The Anambra State Police Command said it would continue to work with other security agencies to tackle criminal elements across the state.

“The Anambra State Police Command reiterates its unwavering commitment, in collaboration with other security agencies, to sustaining proactive, intelligence-led, and results-oriented operations against criminal elements that threaten the peace, safety, and security of residents across the State,” Ikenga said.
