Police Intercepts 47 Sacks Of Military Uniforms, 80 Drug Cartons In Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has recovered 47 sacks of military camouflage uniforms and 80 cartons of suspected illegal substances during an operation in the Surulere area of the state.

Naija News reports that the items were intercepted following an intelligence-driven operation carried out by officers attached to the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit.

The operation also led to the arrest of three suspects identified as Chinedu David, 29, Ezeagwu Chukwuma, 38, and Ifeanyi Ogbeanyi, 45.

Speaking at the police headquarters in Ikeja on Tuesday, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, said the suspects were arrested on Saturday night while transporting the items in an unregistered MAN diesel truck.

According to the police, the truck was loaded with dozens of sacks containing military camouflage uniforms as well as cartons of substances believed to be illicit drugs.

The vehicle and all recovered items were taken into police custody for further investigation.

Preliminary findings showed that the military uniforms were allegedly being transported to the South-East region of the country.

Authorities are now working to determine where the items came from, who owns them, and the individuals or groups they were meant for.

The police commissioner said investigators are examining the level of involvement of each suspect and are also tracking other persons who may be connected to the operation.

Tijani stated that the discovery does not present an immediate security threat to Lagos residents because the consignment was reportedly being moved out of the state.

However, he noted that the recovery raised concerns because criminal groups in different parts of the country have previously been linked to the use of military-style uniforms.

A police officer familiar with the investigation disclosed that the truck driver and his assistant were the first persons arrested.

According to the officer, two additional suspects were later taken into custody after they reportedly appeared at a police station in Surulere to claim ownership of the seized items.
