Taraba NDC Governorship Aspirant Dumps Party
A former governorship aspirant of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Taraba State, Philip Johnson, has resigned from the party after accusing its leadership of denying him victory in the party’s governorship primary.
In his resignation letter addressed to the Taraba State Chairman of the party, Johnson alleged that the primary election process was manipulated despite what he described as a clear victory in the contest.
According to him, the governorship primary was conducted peacefully across the 16 local government areas of the state, and the results collated from the exercise showed that he emerged as the winner.
Naija News reports that Johnson stated the process remained transparent until the stage at which the official declaration of results was expected.
He claimed that members of the congress panel later announced that the final outcome would be declared in Abuja following instructions from the party’s National Secretariat.
The former aspirant further alleged that the results were later changed in favour of another contestant whom he insisted he had defeated during the primary election.
He accused the party of departing from the principles of fairness, justice and internal democracy that it claimed to represent.
“It is unfortunate that a party which presented itself as a platform for progressive change and democratic values has chosen to embrace the very practices it was expected to reject,” he stated in the letter.
