Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Sunday, 14th June, 2026

Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Sunday, 14th June, 2026.

1. Nigeria Has No Electricity, Has Resources That Can’t Be Drilled Due To Stupid Policy – Kemi Badenoch

The leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has said Nigeria’s vast oil resources have failed to translate into a reliable electricity supply because of poor government policies.

Naija News reports that Badenoch, who spent part of her childhood in Nigeria before relocating to the United Kingdom as a teenager, said her experience in Nigeria shaped her views on energy policy, governance and the role of government in the economy.

She made the remarks during a recent interview with The Spectator, where she reflected on how her upbringing influenced her political outlook.

Speaking on energy policy, Badenoch said growing up in Nigeria made her believe that countries must be able to use their natural resources effectively.

She argued that having resources was not enough if government policies prevented citizens from benefiting from them.

“My belief that we need to drill our oil and gas comes from growing up in a country… Nigeria is an oil-producing country, never had electricity,” she said.

“It is very easy to have resources under the ground, but stupid public policy means that you can’t use it.”

According to Badenoch, such policies often begin with promises of control and redistribution but end up damaging the economy.

2. ‘No Negotiation With Terrorists’ – Tinubu Reacts To Death Of Retired Major General

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed shock over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of terrorists in Katsina State.

Naija News reports that the Katsina State Government on Saturday confirmed the death of Major General Rabe Abubakar, while in the captivity of bandits.

The government described the incident as tragic, saying his death was a major loss not only to his family and Katsina State but also to the country.

According to the statement, the retired major general died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while still being held by his abductors.

Reacting in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President noted that General Abubakar, after a distinguished career in the military, retired a few years ago, adding that he was on his way to his hometown when the hoodlums captured him.

Tinubu commiserated with his family, especially his wife, who is still being held against her will by the captors.

He also extended his condolences to the Katsina State government and the armed forces.

3. Bandits Hold Ex-General Rabe’s Widow After Husband Dies In Captivity

Hajiya Amina Abubakar, widow of the late Major General Abubakar Rabe (retd.), is reportedly still being held by bandits.

Naija News understands that Amina was abducted alongside her husband on May 30, 2026, when their vehicle was ambushed along the Marabar Musawa, Kafinsoli road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Rabe, a retired senior military officer, later died in captivity, according to the Katsina State Government.

Before his death was announced, Rabe was seen in a video circulated on social media, where he and his wife relayed the demands of their abductors.

In the four-minute two-second video, the couple were seen standing as the bandits demanded the release of some detained members of their group and the return of seized livestock.

Speaking in the video, Amina said the abductors wanted three persons identified as Sani, Aminu and Nasiru released.

According to her, two of the detained persons were arrested in Jikamshi, while the third was arrested in Kano.

She appealed to the Katsina State Government and the leaders of five local government areas to meet the demands in order to secure their freedom.

In a statement on Saturday, the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, confirmed the death of Rabe.

Mu’azu said the retired general died from complications linked to diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.

The commissioner did not announce the release of the widow, raising further concern over her safety.

Security sources, according to Daily Trust, said efforts were still ongoing to rescue her, but declined to give details or provide a timeline for the operation.

4. How We Planned, Abducted Adelabu’s Sister And Twin Sons – Suspects Reveal

Fresh details have emerged on how suspected members of a kidnap gang allegedly abducted the sister of a former Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Mrs Olaide Busayo Adegoke, and her twin sons in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The suspects, arrested by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department-Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) and other tactical teams of the Oyo State Police Command, were said to have played different roles in the operation carried out on June 3.

Among those arrested were the alleged gang leader, Adewale Abolarinwa, also known as Oloro; Segun Balogun, also known as Alawaye; and Dare Oyedele, popularly called Solution.

The victims were rescued last Saturday from where they were held at Lako community on Ayegun-Olomi Road, Ibadan, following a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

Balogun, a commercial driver at Iwo Road Motor Park, Ibadan, allegedly confessed that he used his driving skills to convey the gang members during the operation.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, he said he had known Oloro for over 10 years through the transport union before he was later approached to join the kidnap plot.

According to him, after showing Oloro the house, the gang leader revealed that he planned to kidnap either Adelabu’s mother or a child from the family.

Balogun said the gang went into action on June 3 after Oloro called him a day earlier to inform him that the operation would be carried out.

He said four of them were in the vehicle used for the operation, adding that three others wore masks while he drove.

Another suspect, Oyedele, popularly known as Solution, was said to be an automobile electrician known around Orita Challenge, Podo and nearby areas of Ibadan.

Police sources said Solution allegedly handled surveillance for the gang before the kidnap.

The gang reportedly began planning the abduction on May 5 by monitoring the compound where the twins lived, the school they attended and the vehicle used to convey them.

In intercepted communications, Solution allegedly described the children’s school as expensive and well-equipped, while also giving information about the family’s residence and movement.

Amaechi, who contested for the ADC presidential primary election but lost to the former vice president, had prior to the primary election declared that he did not buy the ADC presidential form to later become Vice President.

Amaechi also vehemently rejected the outcome of the primary election, which some aggrieved party members alleged was rigged in favour of Atiku.

But when asked if Amaechi has accepted the vice presidential role, Mr Leader Sampson simply said, “yes.”

Kwankwaso said, “Our party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), remains united. As leaders, we must continue to demonstrate maturity by making the necessary sacrifices and tolerating our differences in pursuit of our shared goal.

7. I’m Supporting Tinubu Because He Has Roots In Osun – Adeleke

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu, saying the President should be allowed more time to continue his ongoing reforms and complete his plans for the country.

Naija News reports that Adeleke, in an interview with Western Spring TV, explained that his position is based on regional balance in politics and the idea that power should rotate between the North and the South.

The governor said there is an informal political understanding that each region should have a fair turn in leading the country.

He also said that the current four-year period may not be enough for Bola Tinubu to fully achieve the goals of his administration.

According to him, the reforms need more time to properly take shape and produce results.

The governor also spoke about federal allocations to states, noting that the President has been releasing funds to state governments.

Adeleke said it is now the responsibility of each state to manage and use the money well, especially under current economic pressure.

8. What Next For Ordinary Citizens? David Mark Reacts To Rabe Abubakar’s Death In Bandits’ Captivity

The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has described the death of former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd), in the custody of bandits who abducted him as a national tragedy and a painful reminder of the worsening security situation in the country.

Senator Mark, a retired Brigadier General of the Nigerian Army, lamented that Nigerians have become endangered in their own country due to the persistent threats of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

He noted that the death of a distinguished military officer who devoted his life to the service of the nation underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s security architecture.

Naija News reports that Mark made the submission in a statement on Saturday by his media aide, Kola Ologbondiyan, following the earlier confirmation of Abubakar’s death in captivity.

The former Senate President observed that insecurity has continued to escalate for more than a decade, affecting every segment of society.

9. I Didn’t Beg You For Car – Carter Efe Blasts D’banj Over Alleged Gift Drama

Nigerian streamer Carter Efe has alleged that the car publicly presented to him by music star D’banj was never fully given to him despite the widespread publicity that followed the announcement.

Naija News reports that the controversy began after a video surfaced online in which Carter Efe claimed that the vehicle unveiled during a public event was not handed over as many people believed.

According to him, he was later informed that he would have to pay ₦65 million before taking possession of the car.

The comedian said he was shocked by the development, maintaining that he never requested a car from anyone.

The skitmaker also claimed that the gift turned out differently from what was presented to the public during the highly publicised moment.

Carter Efe further accused media personality Sunday Are of not being sincere with him during discussions surrounding the matter.

He alleged that advice given to him at the time was aimed at preventing him from speaking publicly about what had happened.

The content creator described the vehicle as an “audio” gift, a popular slang term used to suggest that something exists only in words and not in reality.

10. World Cup: Ghana Protests Canada Visa Denial For Thomas Partey

Ghana has formally protested Canada’s refusal to issue a World Cup visa to midfielder Thomas Partey, who is facing trial in Britain on rape and sexual assault charges.

The protest comes ahead of Ghana’s opening World Cup match against Panama, scheduled to take place on Wednesday at the BMO Field in Toronto.

Partey, a key member of the Black Stars squad, will not be available for the encounter after being unable to travel from Ghana’s team base in Boston, United States, to Canada.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed the protest in a statement on Saturday.

Ablakwa said the Ghanaian government had concerns over what he described as “the high-handed and extremely unfair decision” to reject Partey’s visa application.

According to him, Partey remains “a key member of Ghana’s senior national team” and should not be denied entry on the basis of charges that have not been determined by a court.”

“Ghana has dispatched an official note of protest to Canada,” the statement said.

The foreign minister added that the note also requested that Canada review what he called its “unfortunate decision”.

Partey, who now plays for Villarreal after previously featuring for Arsenal, has pleaded not guilty to seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The charges relate to allegations involving four women between 2020 and 2022.

His trial has been fixed for next year, a development that allows the 32-year-old to remain available for Ghana at the World Cup.

However, the Canadian visa refusal means he will miss Ghana’s first game of the tournament.

The Ghanaian government said it respected Canada’s right to enforce its immigration laws, but argued that the decision raised concerns because Partey had not been convicted.
