World Cup: Giresse Tips Senegal For Semi-finals

Former Senegal coach, Alain Giresse, has tipped the Teranga Lions to reach the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup.

Naija News recalls that at the 2022 edition in Qatar, Morocco became the first African country to reach the semi-finals of the tournament.

Speaking in an interview with Wiw Sport, Giresse said Senegal has the quality and potential to go far in the competition.

“I think that one day, an African country will play in the final. If we’re talking about Senegal, it has the potential to at least reach the semi-finals.

“Of course, we know there can be unforeseen events during matches, but intrinsically, the potential is there. We see that African teams are increasingly displaying a level that is approaching the top and the best rankings in the world,” Giresse said.

Senegal has been drawn in Group I alongside Norway, Iraq and France.

The Teranga Lions will be looking to build on Africa’s recent progress at the World Cup and challenge strongly against some of the best teams in the competition.

Giresse said African football had continued to improve and was gradually closing the gap on the traditional football powers.

He added that Senegal, with their talent and experience, had enough quality to compete for a place in the latter stages of the tournament.
