Ronaldo Backs Portugal For Strong World Cup Challenge

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed confidence ahead of the 2026 World Cup, insisting he is in good condition and optimistic about his country’s chances as the squad departed Lisbon for their base camp in Palm Beach, Florida.

Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, preparing for a record sixth World Cup appearance, said the team had completed a demanding but productive build-up to the tournament.

“We’re approaching this competition with a lot of hope,” said the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“The preparation has been very good, tiring, because we have worked hard,” continued the veteran Portugal captain who insisted he was “physically good”.

“I am very positive, I believe things will go well and that we will put in a good performance.”

Ronaldo also praised the quality of the current squad, which many regard as one of Portugal’s strongest generations.

“It’s a very good generation… which will bring a lot of joy to the Portuguese people,” the forward said of the squad around him.

Portugal begins their World Cup campaign on June 17 in Houston against the Democratic Republic of the Congo before facing Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.

“The most important thing is to start well, with the first match, then follow up with the second and third… finish top of the group and from there, take it one match at a time,” he added.

Despite Ronaldo’s experience and status, some observers have questioned whether his continued presence could limit the development of younger attacking talents in Portugal coach Roberto Martinez’s side.

Naija News reports that Portugal head into the tournament after back-to-back 2-1 friendly wins over Chile and Nigeria, although Ronaldo did not find the net in either match.

Portugal’s best World Cup finish remains third place at the 1966 tournament, while they also reached the quarter-finals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
