South Africa Start 2026 FIFA World Cup With Defeat Against Mexico

Mexico opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over South Africa on Thursday night, June 11, capitalising on defensive mistakes and dominating long spells of the Group stage encounter.

The hosts scored early through Julián Quiñones in the ninth minute after a costly error at the back by South Africa. The forward pounced on the loose ball at the edge of the area and fired past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to give Mexico a 1-0 lead.

Mexico continued to control possession and nearly doubled their advantage several times before the break. Raúl Jiménez went close with a header, while Quiñones rattled the outside of the post as South Africa struggled to contain the pressure.

South Africa had chances of their own, with Lyle Foster wasting a promising headed opportunity and defender Mbekezile Mbokazi forcing a fine save late in the first half.

The match swung further in Mexico’s favour four minutes into the second half when South Africa were reduced to ten men. Midfielder Yaya Sithole received a straight red card for a dangerous challenge, leaving his side with an uphill task.

Mexico took full advantage and extended their lead in the 67th minute. Roberto Alvarado delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area and Jiménez rose highest to guide a header into the bottom-left corner for 2-0.

South Africa’s frustrations deepened in the closing stages when substitute Themba Zwane was sent off following a VAR review in the 84th minute, reducing the African side to nine men.

However, Mexico’s evening was not entirely trouble-free. Defender César Montes was shown a straight red card deep into stoppage time after a reckless challenge, but the dismissal came too late to affect the outcome.

In front of a crowd of 80,824 spectators, Mexico comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to secure all three points and make an ideal start to their 2026 World Cup campaign.
