Tinubu Declares Security Emergency, Approves Recruitment Of Police, Soldiers

President Bola Tinubu has declared that democracy without security is a mirage, as he announced fresh security measures to tackle killings, kidnappings and other violent crimes across the country.

Naija News reports that Tinubu spoke in a nationwide broadcast to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day and mark 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule.

The President said the mood of this year’s celebration had been dampened by the abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states.

Tinubu said his administration had declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of more security personnel to strengthen the country’s internal security system.

He said, “Though this year’s mood is dampened by the abduction of our children in Oyo and Borno, we remain hopeful for their safe return.

“Democracy without security is a mirage. That is why this administration declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 new police officers and thousands of military recruits.”

The President said the 2026 budget made the country’s largest allocation to defence and security.

According to him, the budget commits ₦5.41 trillion to the sector as part of efforts to protect lives and property.

“Our 2026 budget commits ₦5.41 trillion, our largest ever, to defence and security. Our administration is ever ready to do much more to secure our people,” Tinubu said.
