‘Obasanjo’s Daughter Set To Join PDP After Dumping APC’
A former senator representing Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, is set to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) days after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Multiple sources close to the daughter of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, who spoke with The Cable, said she had communicated her decision to key associates in the opposition party.
A source said, “I can confirm that Senator Iyabo Obasanjo is moving to the PDP.
“Her political focus is firmly on Ogun State and the future direction of its governance.”
Sources said plans were being finalised for Iyabo and former federal lawmaker, Oladipupo Adebutu, to hold a rally on June 16 at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
“I am informed that while it may take that route, the plan is for a joint Obasanjo/Adebutu rally, involving the senate and governorship campaigns,” another source said.
Iyabo was elected to the Senate in April 2007 on the platform of the PDP. She served as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health but failed to secure re-election in 2011.
APC Governorship Fallout
The former Ogun State commissioner for health recently resigned from the APC, two months after losing the party’s governorship ticket in the state.
She had joined the APC in February 2026 and later declared an interest in the governorship race.
However, she suspended her bid after the party adopted Senator Solomon Adeola, who represents Ogun West, as its consensus candidate for the 2027 election.
In her resignation notice, Iyabo accused the APC leadership of persistent disrespect. She also alleged that agreements earlier reached were breached.
The former senator further claimed that some of her supporters were maltreated and prevented from accessing the venue where the consensus arrangement was formalised.
