It Annoyed Me – Nkem Owoh Reveals How He Was Mocked When Asked To Pray

Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh has spoken on how his fame as a comic actor sometimes affects how people treat him in real life, even during serious moments.

Naija News reports that he shared this in an interview with Selah Meditate last week.

According to him, many people are already used to seeing him as a funny character, so they tend to react with laughter even when he is not trying to be funny.

He recalled a situation at a gathering where he was asked to lead a prayer.

As soon as he started the prayer, beginning with words that call on God, some people could not hold back their laughter.

He said the reaction made him uncomfortable because he sees prayer as something serious and personal.

He said: “I remember a gathering, and they say I should pray. I just said, ‘In Jesus’ name,’ and people were suppressing laughter and all that. It annoyed me because I don’t joke with my prayers.”

The thespian also spoke on the growing practice in the film industry where some producers choose actors based on their popularity on social media instead of acting skill.

According to him, being popular on social media does not take the place of true acting ability. He said that no matter how famous someone becomes online, it cannot replace the value of real talent on screen.

He stated: “I don’t think social-media fame is replacing real talent. It can’t. There is no way social media-fame can replace real talent.”
