Kebbi Assembly Elects New Speaker

The Kebbi State House of Assembly has elected Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje, the lawmaker representing Sakaba Constituency, as its new Speaker.

Naija News reports that his emergence followed a unanimous decision by members of the Assembly during a plenary session held at the legislative complex in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

The election was conducted to fill the position left vacant after the death of former Speaker Mohammed Usman-Zuru.

The Clerk of the House, Sulaiman Shamaki, presided over the sitting and explained that the Assembly acted in line with constitutional provisions that allow lawmakers to choose a Speaker from among themselves whenever the office becomes vacant.

The process began with the nomination of Maikasuwa-Dangoje by Adamu Birnin-Yauri, who represents Ngaski Constituency. The nomination received support from Lawal Haruna of Fakai Constituency.

Following the nomination and endorsement, members of the House agreed on his selection, leading to his election as Speaker.

After taking over the leadership of the Assembly, Maikasuwa-Dangoje expressed appreciation to his fellow lawmakers for entrusting him with the responsibility.

He assured members that he would work with everyone in the House and provide leadership that would promote openness and cooperation.

The new Speaker also stated that he would focus on strengthening unity among lawmakers and improving the performance of the Assembly in carrying out its duties.

He pledged to support the passage of laws aimed at improving governance and meeting the needs of residents across the state.

The leadership change comes nearly two months after the passing of Usman-Zuru, who died on April 7 in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving medical care.
