Two Customs Officers Killed As Gunmen Attack Checkpoint In Kebbi

Gunmen suspected to be Lakurawa terrorists have reportedly killed two marine officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) during an attack on a security checkpoint in Gendene community, Bagudu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

Naija News learnt that the attack occurred around 3:00 am on Wednesday when the armed assailants stormed the checkpoint and opened fire on the officers while they were on duty.

Residents of the area said the gunmen operated for several minutes before fleeing the community.

According to Daily Post, a resident, Bello Shata, told journalists that one of the slain officers, said to be a senior operative, was allegedly burnt alive after the attackers set fire to the structure where he was sleeping.

According to sources in the community, the terrorists also set ablaze the operational vehicle being used by the officers during the attack.

“The attackers came in the early hours and launched the assault unexpectedly. One of the officers was trapped in the fire after they burnt the place where he was sleeping,” the source said.

Residents further disclosed that two villagers, including a man and a woman, sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.

The injured victims were reportedly rushed to a health facility for medical attention, although the exact location of the hospital was not disclosed.

The latest attack has heightened fears among residents of the area, who have repeatedly raised concerns over growing insecurity and the activities of armed groups in parts of Kebbi State.

When contacted on the development, the spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Bashir Usman, said the command was still gathering details about the incident.

“We will issue a statement once we get the full report,” he said.
