Prices Of Tomatoes, Onions Beans, Garri Rises

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said the prices of tomatoes, beans, garri, onions, ginger and other selected food items increased on a month-on-month basis in April 2026.

The NBS disclosed this in its Selected Food Prices Watch report for April 2026, released in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the report, the average price of one kilogramme of tomatoes rose by 6.60 per cent from ₦1,104.85 in March 2026 to ₦1,177.92 in April 2026.

Naija News reports that the bureau, however, noted that the price of tomatoes dropped on a year-on-year basis when compared with the same period in 2025.

It said, “However, on a year-on-year basis, the price of 1kg of tomatoes decreased by 8.23 per cent from ₦1,283.57 recorded in April 2025.”

The report also showed that the average price of one kilogramme of brown beans increased by 0.99 per cent on a month-on-month basis.

The price moved from ₦1,325.85 in March 2026 to ₦1,338.93 in April 2026.

The NBS, however, stated that the commodity was cheaper when compared with April 2025.

It said, “On a year-on-year basis, however, the price decreased significantly by 44.89 per cent from ₦2,429.39 recorded in April 2025 to ₦1,338.93 in April 2026.”

Similarly, the average price of one kilogramme of white garri rose by 0.93 per cent from ₦801.54 in March 2026 to ₦808.96 in April 2026.

The bureau added, “However, on a year-on-year basis, the price dropped by 39.86 per cent from ₦1,345.10 recorded in April 2025.”

The NBS said the average price of one kilogramme of onion increased by 0.98 per cent, rising from ₦1,153.14 in March 2026 to ₦1,164.39 in April 2026.

It, however, stated that the price was lower than the figure recorded in April 2025.

The report said, “On a year-on-year basis, 1kg of onions decreased by 22.56 per cent from ₦1,503.56 recorded in April 2025.”

Fresh ginger also recorded a monthly increase, with the average price of one kilogramme rising by 0.73 per cent from ₦5,541.25 in March 2026 to ₦5,581.82 in April 2026.

Unlike some other food items, ginger also recorded a year-on-year increase.

The NBS said, “On a year-on-year basis, 1kg of ginger increased by 12.30 per cent from ₦4,970.66 recorded in April 2025.

The report further showed that the average price of one litre of palm oil increased slightly by 0.12 per cent on a month-on-month basis.

The price moved from ₦2,393.38 in March 2026 to ₦2,396.32 in April 2026.

The NBS also reported a year-on-year increase for palm oil, although the figure provided in the report appeared to show a lower April 2026 price than the April 2025 figure.

It said, “On a year-on-year basis, it also increased by 4.77 per cent from ₦2,516.36 recorded in April 2025.”

Bayelsa, Plateau Record Highest, Lowest Tomato Prices

A state-by-state analysis showed that Bayelsa recorded the highest average price of one kilogramme of tomatoes in April 2026 at ₦1,600.73.

Plateau recorded the lowest price at ₦730.48.

For brown beans, Oyo recorded the highest average price at ₦1,938.91, while Taraba recorded the lowest at ₦750.

The report also showed that Abia recorded the highest average price of one kilogramme of white garri at ₦1,075.47, while Plateau recorded the lowest at ₦517.94.

For onions, Abia recorded the highest average price at ₦2,115.67, while Kwara recorded the lowest price at ₦684.38.

The NBS further stated that Abia also recorded the highest average price of one kilogramme of onion bulb at ₦2,191.63, while Nasarawa recorded the lowest price at ₦832.16.

For palm oil, Ekiti recorded the highest average price of one bottle at ₦2,819.09, while Abia recorded the lowest at ₦2,024.41.

South-South leads tomato price by zone

On zonal analysis, the report showed that the South-South recorded the highest average price of one kilogramme of tomatoes at ₦1,561.10.

It was followed by the South-East at ₦1,379.57, while the North-West recorded the lowest average price at ₦822.72.

For brown beans, the South-West recorded the highest average price at ₦1,787.09, followed by the South-South at ₦1,764.99.

The North-East recorded the lowest average price for brown beans at ₦871.79.

The South-East recorded the highest average price of one kilogramme of white garri at ₦944.58, followed closely by the South-South at ₦944.01.

The North-Central recorded the lowest average price for white garri at ₦673.88.

South-East Records Highest Onion Price

The NBS said the South-East recorded the highest average price of one kilogramme of onion bulb at ₦1,735.53.

It was followed by the South-South at ₦1,268.96, while the North-Central recorded the lowest average price at ₦911.40.

The report stated, “The North-Central recorded the lowest average price of 1kg of onion at ₦911.40.”

For fresh ginger, the South-West recorded the highest average price at ₦6,812.92, followed by the South-East at ₦6,432.15.

The North-East recorded the lowest average price of fresh ginger at ₦881.12.

The figures indicate that while several food items became more expensive between March and April 2026, some remained cheaper when compared with their prices in April 2025.
