Recall that in May 2026, Vice President Kashim Shettima travelled from Abuja to Cotonou, the capital of the Republic of Benin, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration ceremony of Romuald Wadagni as the President of Benin.
Naija News reports that the trip was confirmed in a statement released by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President.
The Presidency said Nigeria and the Republic of Benin have maintained a close relationship over the years due to their shared history, culture, and economic ties. Both countries also continue to work together on matters relating to border security, trade, and energy cooperation.
Also in April, President Tinubu had sent a congratulatory message to Wadagni following his victory in the presidential election in the Republic of Benin.
Naija News reports that Wadagni, who served as the country’s Finance Minister, won the election held on April 12 with a large number of votes, securing his emergence as president-elect.
In a message released on Thursday, April 16, President Tinubu said Wadagni’s victory shows the confidence the people of Benin have in his leadership and his past work in government. He also praised the conduct of the election, noting that it was peaceful and orderly.
The Nigerian leader further acknowledged the people and government of Benin for maintaining calm throughout the electoral process and staying committed to democracy.
