Police Block Access To Venue Of PDP Convention In Abuja
There was tension in Abuja on Saturday after security operatives blocked access to the venue selected for a planned special convention organized by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki.
Naija News reports that the convention was scheduled to take place at the A-Class Event Centre in the Federal Capital Territory and was expected to focus on the ratification of former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate.
However, police officers stationed several patrol vehicles along the roads leading to the event centre, effectively shutting down access to the facility. The blockade covered the routes connecting the venue from both the Wuse and Maitama areas of Abuja.
The action prevented members of the PDP faction from reaching the venue. It also affected other motorists and road users who had no connection with the planned gathering, as movement around the area became restricted.
The development the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, cautioned hotels and event centres against allowing what he described as illegal political groups or organisations to use their facilities.
The warning was linked to security concerns within the FCT.
As of the time of filing this report, security personnel remained at the location, while it was unclear whether the organizers would relocate the convention or seek an alternative arrangement.
