APC Suspends Senator Echocho Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended the senator representing Kogi East Senatorial District, Jibrin Isah Echocho, over alleged actions considered to be against the interest of the party.

The decision followed a resolution by the Executive Committee of the APC in Odu Ward 2, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, during its meeting held on May 26, 2026.

The resolution was made available to journalists on Thursday in Lokoja, the state capital.

In a suspension letter signed by the ward Chairman, Shaibu Mohammed, and Secretary, Kabiru Mohammed, alongside other executives, the party accused the senator of engaging in prolonged anti-party activities.

The ward executives alleged that Echocho’s actions were part of efforts to actualise what they described as a self-serving third-term agenda, rather than promote the welfare of the party at the ward and district levels.

Naija News reports that the letter accused the senator of working against the interest of the APC despite benefiting from the party’s platform for eight years.

According to the ward exco, the decision to suspend him became necessary because of what it called his continued disregard for party unity and discipline.

The party said Echocho’s conduct had created concerns among members in the ward and across the senatorial district.

However, the Kogi East Progressive Forum rejected the purported suspension of the senator, describing it as illegal, baseless and politically motivated.

The spokesperson for the political pressure group, Comrade Musa Ibrahim, said the move was a desperate attempt by political opponents to tarnish the image of the senator.

The group insisted that the allegation linking Echocho to anti-party activities and a planned defection was false and misleading.

The Forum said, “The allegations linking Senator Jibrin Isah to anti-party activities and planned defection are false and misleading.”

The group further argued that no ward executive had the constitutional power to suspend a serving senator without following the proper procedures and involving the appropriate organs of the party.

It maintained that the suspension did not follow due process and should not be taken seriously by party members or the public.

The Forum said Echocho remained a committed member of the APC and had not taken any step that could justify the action announced by the ward executives.

The suspension comes weeks after Echocho faulted the conduct of the APC primary election in Kogi East Senatorial District.

The senator had alleged that the primary fell short of party guidelines and electoral laws.

Following the exercise, he petitioned the National Working Committee of the APC over the outcome of the primary, which was won by Joseph Erico Ameh.

His petition had raised fresh concerns within the party in Kogi East, where the outcome of the senatorial primary has continued to generate political tension.
