Egypt Name Mohamed Salah In 2026 World Cup Squad
Egypt named captain Mohamed Salah in their provisional 27-man squad for this summer’s FIFA World Cup, with the veteran forward expected to lead the country at the tournament in North America.
Mohamed Salah, 33, remains the standout figure in coach Hossam Hassan’s selection despite preparing to leave Liverpool at the end of the season after a glittering nine-year spell at Anfield.
Salah heads into the tournament with 67 goals in 115 appearances for Egypt and will once again carry the hopes of a nation chasing a deep World Cup run.
Also included is Omar Marmoush, who enjoyed a strong campaign with Manchester City, while teenage forward Hamza Abdelkarim earned a surprise call-up after impressing for Barcelona Under-19s. The 18-year-old is yet to win a senior international cap.
There was no place for Nantes striker Mostafa Mohamed, one of the notable omissions from the squad announced on Wednesday.
Egypt will trim the group down to the FIFA-required 26 players after a friendly against Russia in Cairo on 28 May. Another high-profile warm-up fixture against Brazil awaits on 6 June in Cleveland before the competition gets under way.
The seven-time African champions have been drawn in Group G, where they will open their campaign against Belgium on 15 June. They will then face New Zealand on 22 June before completing the group stage against Iran five days later.
Goalkeepers Mohamed El Shenawy and Mostafa Shobeir were included, alongside midfielders Mahmoud Trezeguet and Emam Ashour as Egypt prepare for the expanded 48-team tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
