Ex-Ghana Coach Otto Addo Named To FIFA Technical Study Group For 2026 World Cup
Former Ghana head coach Otto Addo has been appointed to an elite 11-member Technical Study Group by FIFA for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, a few months after losing his coaching job.
Naija News reports that Ghana sacked Otto Addo on March 31 after a disappointing run that featured friendly defeats to Germany and Austria. Under his watch, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) despite boasting Premier League-based talent such as Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo.
Despite that, Addo is the only African coach on the newly formed FIFA Technical Study Group for the 2026 World Cup.
The former Black Stars boss will work alongside a group of respected football thinkers tasked with analysing all 104 matches at the tournament. Their role goes far beyond simple observation. The group will track tactical shifts, technical trends and the physical demands of shaping elite football.
Addo’s appointment reflects a reputation built on years of coaching experience with Ghana and in European club football. He is expected to play a key role in FIFA’s effort to deepen understanding of the modern game.
The Technical Study Group will produce detailed insights throughout the tournament. Those findings will feed directly into coaching education, player development programmes and wider strategic planning across global football.
The panel’s work is designed to ensure that lessons from the World Cup reach coaches, players and federations around the world.
