NNPP Adopts Consensus Method To Pick Presidential Candidate

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has decided to pick its candidates for the 2027 general elections through a consensus process instead of primary elections.

Naija News reports that the party also announced that all previously expelled members have been forgiven and can return to the party.

The party founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Boniface Aniebonam, made this known in a statement released in Lagos.

He explained that the decision was taken after discussions within the party aimed at avoiding internal contests that often push out capable candidates before general elections.

According to him, the party wants to focus on selecting people who have strong support and can perform well in elections rather than relying on money-driven competition.

He added that the NNPP will now encourage interested Nigerians who believe in the party’s vision for a better country to join and participate in the election process.

He also noted that women will be given special consideration, as they will not pay nomination fees beyond basic administrative charges, which he described as part of their commitment to the party.

Aniebonam said that elected members of the party at different levels will continue to receive automatic tickets for the 2027 elections, in line with earlier decisions taken at the party’s convention in Lagos. He stated that this policy remains unchanged despite past internal disagreements.

On the issue of expelled members, he said the party has decided to forgive those who were removed during earlier disputes and court cases. He explained that some of them were influenced by internal conflicts and misinformation at the time, which led to actions against party rules.

He added that these members are now free to return and rejoin the party, but they must report to the current leadership under the National Working Committee headed by Agbo Major. Returning members are expected to show loyalty and follow party rules going forward.

He also noted that anyone returning to the party will go through proper screening before being fully accepted. The final decision will be made in consultation with party leaders at the national level.

Aniebonam said the party leadership will continue to manage and supervise its activities based on existing court judgments and internal regulations.

He also urged members not to worry about delays in updates from the Independent National Electoral Commission regarding party records, saying the legal decisions in favour of the party remain valid.

He advised new and returning members to properly resign from any other political party they belong to before joining the NNPP, in order to comply with electoral laws that do not allow double membership.

He added that all resignations must be properly documented both in writing and through official records to avoid issues during the election process.
