Trump Criticizes Germany Over Refusal To Support Iran War
The United States President Donald Trump has criticised German leadership for declining to join the Iranian military campaign, calling their stance inappropriate after America backed European allies in Ukraine.
Trump directed his criticism at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for stating the Iran conflict does not concern Germany. The American leader compared Washington’s support for Ukraine to his expectations for European assistance in the Middle East.
Trump noted that tensions over Ukraine appear to be easing and suggested a resolution might be possible. He then highlighted Germany’s refusal to reciprocate American military support.
Naija News gathered that German officials publicly rejected participation in the Iran campaign last week, sparking Trump’s sharp response.
Germany Defends Position On Iran Campaign
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Chancellor Merz clarified Berlin’s position, emphasising that the conflict falls outside NATO’s responsibilities.
“This war has nothing to do with NATO. It is not NATO’s war,” the spokesperson stated.
The officials confirmed Germany never considered joining the campaign and maintains that position.
Additionally, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius also questioned the logic behind American requests for naval support.
“What does Trump expect a handful or two handfuls of European frigates to do in the Strait of Hormuz that the powerful US Navy cannot do? This is not our war; we have not started it,” Pistorius said.
Meanwhile, Trump contrasted Germany’s position with America’s stance on Ukraine.
“I think that’s calming down a little bit. And I think we have a chance of getting it done, but it doesn’t affect us thousands of miles away,” Trump said about Ukraine.
“That’s why when I heard the head of Germany say, ‘This is not our war’ about Iran, I said, well, Ukraine’s not our war. We helped, but Ukraine’s not our war. I thought it was a very inappropriate statement to make, but he made it. You can’t erase it. But he felt that way,” the president added.
The dispute reveals growing friction between Washington and Berlin over international military burden-sharing. Additionally, there is now growing concern about whether the US will continue to come to the aid of its European allies in times of need and what endgame awaits the Ukraine-Russia peace talks.
